ALPS volunteers began an effort to control the growth of the invasive Italian Thistle that has popped up over the last few years.  The thistle grows to over five feet tall and covers approximately 10,000 square feet of the property.

To control the thistle the volunteers are mowing the area very close to the ground while the thistle is just beginning to grow and then covering the area with paper and four inches of mulch/wood chips.  These measure don't allow the thistle to grow or go to seed and spread.  The paper and mulch help to amend the soil as they decompose and the earthworms love the layer where the paper meets the soil.
